Hjalmar Bjørge

In January 2022 we purchased the Northern Light Cruising Company along with the MV Hjalmar Bjørge, a perennially popular small cruise ship for the last 20+ years with a very loyal following of repeat guests. We are very proud to have added her to the Hebridean Adventures fleet, replacing the MV Monadhliath who was retired at the end of the 2023 season, enabling us to expand our range and length of cruises, as well as changing to her home port of Oban which is very convenient for those travelling via Glasgow in particular.

The MV Hjalmar Bjørge (the correct Norwegian pronunciation is ”YAL-MUH B’YOR-GAY” but we call her the “HAL-MUH GEORGE” to keep life simple) is a former Norwegian ice-class rescue vessel. Since undergoing an extensive refurbishment this outstanding small ship combines luxury and comfort with seaworthiness eminently suited to adventurous sea voyages for up to 12 passengers. The vessel is currently registered MCA “Cat 2” (60 miles from a safe haven). She has the capability if required, to have this coding up-rated to Cat 0 (unrestricted worldwide) and in summer 2005 completed a successful cruise of the Faroe Islands and northern coast of Iceland.

Hjalmar Bjørge is an ideal platform from which both individuals and groups can explore the beautiful Inner and Outer Hebrides of Scotland, including St Kilda, the Isles of Skye and Mull and the West Coast of the Highlands, or even further afield such Orkney and Shetland. There are many thousands of miles of coast to explore in Scotland and beyond and we would like to show you some of the most remote parts of it. The beauty of a vessel the size of Hjalmar Bjørge is that it’s large enough to contain comfortable cabins and saloon but small enough to drop anchor in the most inaccessible and picturesque locations that passengers on larger cruise ships can only dream about. If you’d like to share this experience with a small number of like-minded guests (no more than 12 in total) then you’ve come to the right place, and you can even private charter the boat for a really bespoke experience.

We do list all her itineraries on our Cruises page and for the time being to view and book ALL cruises available on the Hjalmar Bjørge please contact us by any of our regular methods such as email, contact form or phone. Thank you.
