Otter

These playful mammals are also expert hunters -- eating fish, crustaceans and other critters. In Scotland, an otter’s den (aka ‘holt’) is usually built under tree roots or a rocky cairn, in which the offspring (or ‘pups’) live for up to one year.

IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS

Powerful webbed feet make these creatures exceptional swimmers; aided by long, slim bodies, short limbs and long, muscular tails. Their coat is brown and when they dive they often exhibit a very sleek arched back shape as they go down which can help spot them from seals at distance.
