The orca whale, also referred to as killer whale, is the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. Highly social in nature, these whales live in matrilineal pods of up to 40 individuals and use a series of clicks, whistles and calls to navigate the ocean around them.

IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS

Recognised for their bold, black and white colouring, you may not know that orcas also have small grey patches located just behind the dorsal fin -- referred to as a ‘saddle’ or ‘cape’; the dorsal fin can be up to two metres high. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled: these whales can travel up to 34.5 mph, making them the fastest marine mammal!
