Overview

We’re delighted to welcome back Chris Gomersall as expedition leader, one the UK’s best known wildlife photographers, working for 14 years as the in-house photographer at the RSPB. He first guided with us in 2002 and has a wealth of Hebridean experience. His main role will be as a specialist bird & wildlife guide; however, he will also provide mentoring for aspiring and experienced photographers. Guests arrive in Oban for around 1230 with the Hjalmar Bjørge departing at 1330 for Canna on day one. Our route north will, of course, depend on prevailing weather conditions. Hopefully after a first night at Canna we will cruise up the west side of Skye and on to the Shiant Islands. From there we will follow the east coast of Lewis before making our passage to North Rona where, if possible, we will spend one or two nights on anchor. The village ruins on Rona are fascinating, and at its heart stand the Chapel and Cell of Saint Ronan, some of the oldest surviving Christian ruins in the UK. From Rona we will sail west to Sula Sgeir to view the gannet colony. From here we’ll head south, down the west coast of Lewis and towards the Flannan Islands, with an overnight stop in Loch Roag. There may be time to visit Little Bernera, or the island of Scarp before commencing our return home after a final hearty breakfast via the Sound of Harris and back to Oban by mid to late morning.

Highlights

Cetaceans

Cetaceans

There should be plenty of dolphin and other cetacean sightings throughout; in recent years some of our better sightings have been in the north of the Hebrides, such as those involving orca and humpback whales (fingers crossed!)

History

History

There are many fascinating sites of archaeological and historic interest on Canna, the Shiants, North Rona (the 1,000 year old St Ronan's Chapel), the Flannan Isles, West Loch Roag, and Scarp. You will be spoilt for choice.

Birds Galore

Birds Galore

If the weather is kind to us then possible highlights include the seabird colonies on the Shiant Islands with their puffins, and the gannetry on Sula Sgeir. Plus more seabirds on the Flannan's, and golden and white-tailed eagles on Scarp.

Guests arrive in Oban on Friday 19th July for around 1230 with the Hjalmar Bjørge departing at 1330. Our route north will, of course, depend on prevailing weather conditions. There may be time to visit Little Bernera, or the island of Scarp before commencing our return home via the Sound of Harris, finally arriving back in Oban on Monday 29th July.

If you have a favourite pair of binoculars, please do bring them along. They will be very useful for spotting wildlife and watching it up close, as well as studying details of the landscape and ancient monuments that we pass by. If you don't have your own don't worry - we will have some loan pairs on-board for you. Also, don't forget a lens cloth or wipes for cleaning any salt spray.
