Overview

** Just one male cabin sharing place left! ** Our best-selling St Kilda expedition cruise from Oban offers an adventurous (and weather-dependant!) itinerary aiming to enable guests to spend time walking on Hirta, the main island of St Kilda (with packed lunches provided). Your cruise will visit at least one other remote island as well during our transit to or from St Kilda, located 40 miles west of the Isle of Harris in the Atlantic. This little archipelago punches well above its weight, being the UK's only dual UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to huge numbers of seabirds plus cetaceans in its surrounding waters. All our St Kilda cruises uniquely offer a comprehensive cruise not just to the Stacs and Boreray, but also around Hirta and Soay (weather dependent) for close up views of the dramatic sea cliffs, bird colonies, local Soay sheep, and rock formations. Sightings and findings from previous similar cruises: Arctic skua – basking shark – black guillemot – bottlenose dolphins – common dolphins – gannets – golden eagle – great northern diver – great skuas – guillemots – humpback whale – kittiwakes – Leach’s petrels – long-tailed skua – Manx shearwaters – minke whales – otters – peregrine – pomarine skua – porpoise – puffins – razorbills – red-throated divers – Risso’s dolphins – sea eagle – seals – Soay sheep – St Kilda mouse – St Kilda wren – storm petrels – sunfish – whale vertebrae found on beach – white-beaked dolphins.

Highlights

World Heritage Site

World Heritage Site

Recognised internationally by UNESCO both for its cultural and wildlife significance, the little archipelago of St Kilda consists of the islands of Hirta, Dun, Soay and Boreray, along with the giant sea stacks of Stac An Armin and Stac Lee, the tallest in Britain.

Village Bay

Village Bay

The main draw of St Kilda is the chance to step back in time and imagine how the remote village community managed to survive here. Set foot in some of the restored buildings and soak up the atmosphere - it really is something special.

Flora and Fauna

Flora and Fauna

The seabird colonies such as the gannets on the Stacs are justly famous here, and a former source of protein for the islanders. Puffins, skuas, fulmars and wheatears abound but the St Kilda wren and mouse are found nowhere else - will you spot them?

Itinerary Overview

Guests arrive in Oban ready for around 1530 on Thursday 1st August, with the Hjalmar Bjorge departing in the late afternoon – the overnight destination based on forecast conditions.

While all our adventures cruises have a rough itinerary in mind, they are subject to the vagaries of the weather and sea conditions each day, and none more so than the remote islands of St Kilda. Your skipper will know the best anchorages to aim for and may respond to particularly good wildlife spotting or shore excursion opportunities along the way. Therefore please see the proposed cruising area map that will give you an idea of the variety of locations you may be cruising in and around.

If the weather is kind and we can make the archipelago, then you will have time exploring the main island of Hirta (with picnic lunches provided for all-day walks) and viewing the other islands and stacks in the group – Dun, Soay, Stac Lee, Boreray and Stac an Armin.

The journey back will be less intense with time ashore at perhaps Mingulay and/or Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. We arrive back in Oban for your departure after breakfast on the last morning of Thursday 8th August.
