A 2-night cruise from Ullapool to Stornoway, stopping first at the Summer Isles at the mouth of Loch Broom, and then at the enchanting Shiant Isles located in the Minch off the Isle of Lewis. Join our trip leader Noel Hawkins, an avid snorkeler who has been instrumental in helping establish the snorkelling trails for the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and explore these two beautiful, remote and diverse locations.
We will meet in Ullapool, timing our departure for around midday for those travelling in the morning to reach us. It's only about an hour's leisurely cruise up Loch Broom beneath the majestic mountain scenery before arriving at the lovely Summer Isles, usually only seen passing by from the ferry. Still enough time to spot your first harbour porpoise, or some common dolphins maybe! Once we anchor there will be a chance to snorkel in the afternoon and perhaps go ashore on one of the islands to explore as well before dinner. That evening we will be anchored in a sheltered position amongst the islands where we can watch the sun go down and spot some wildlife from the deck, perhaps with a nice drink in your hand.
After a hearty breakfast to fuel you for the day ahead, we will head across the Minch to the Shiant Isles, passing through some great waters for spotting whales, dolphins, porpoise and sea eagles on the way.
We will anchor at the Shiants where you will have your first chance to get in the sheltered clear waters and explore amidst the puffins and other seabirds. Afterwards we will settle down to dinner and spend the night at the islands, watching and listening to the thousands of nesting seabirds.
The morning will offer another quick chance to snorkel at the Shiants, or perhaps take a walk ashore. The islands are very interesting to explore on foot with history dating back to the Vikings and beyond. We will plan to head back into Stornoway in plenty of time for you to make the afternoon ferry back to Ullapool, taking in the magnificent Hebridean scenery along the way and watching out for more whales, dolphins and eagles!
**Please note that whilst we try to make these trips accessible to everyone, the boat is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues due to the compact spaces and steep stairs descending to the cabins.
